AS obesity among primary school children throughout the South East continues to rise, schools across Farnham including St Polycarp’s and St Peter’s primary, paint a somewhat different picture.

According to latest statistics a third of year six children (33.2 per cent) are overweight or obese in England. Obese children are more likely to be obese as adults, which in turn increases their risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Pupils and staff at North Bute Primary School in Port Bannatyne are embracing the New Year resolution for health and fitness by going for a mile-long walk in the village every day.

Their ‘Walk a Mile a Day’ effort follows in the footsteps (sorry) of those at St Ninian’s Primary in Stirling, who pioneered the ‘daily mile’ idea in 2012, finding that it helped pupils’ concentration as well as their health and wellbeing – and who soon found schools across the country taking note.

The Daily Mile Initiative

Children’s weight is a reflection of their general development and physical health. Ideally, it would be great if all children could maintain a healthy weight. Sadly, in the real world the story is different. Childhood obesity has remained high in Scotland for some time now and efforts to reduce this have now become even more important. It is on this note that an initiative that’s attempting to achieve this is receiving so much recognition both in Scotland and other parts of the world. The Daily Mile programme is an innovative whole-school physical activity initiative that allows class time to be taken to get all pupils to walk or run for 15 minutes every day, when school is in session. This is done on top of their usual PE classes.

Up and Running

Ni4kids talks to the fitness folk who are helping kids across the land to kick-start their bodies into action…

Across the UK, and closer to home, there are a number of new schemes that are promoting a completely new and innovative way to inspire children to get out and get into sport.

No one could question the ambition for our kids to be as active and healthy as possible. Current NHS guidelines suggest children aged five to 16 need to do at least 60 minutes of daily aerobic activity, with children under five, who can walk unaided, being physically active for at least three hours spread throughout the day. But it can be difficult to fit in just as much as they need. Busy lives, social pressures, and the ever present tech distraction, means that for some children, their only experience with fitness is within the PE setting – which has its limits in terms of both time and curriculum.
